Poi- Leng Fest observed at Namsai

NAMSAI, 29th Jan: The Poi-Leng festival popularly known as the Grand Chariot Festival was celebrated to pay obeisance to the departed monk,Ven Kalyanamitta Bhikku as per Theravada Buddhist traditions here at Namsai today.Three Day ritual that started from Sunday last will be culminate on January 30 next.

82 years old Ven Kalyanamitta was expired on June 2’2017 . ‘As per the rituals, the mortal remains of the monks are installed on an artistically designed chariot and pulled by monks and devotees on either side thus symbolising the participation in the last journey of the departed monks’ informed a local,Chow Tewa Engling .He further added that the mortal remains are embalmed using wax and tobacco for preservation before being kept in the coffin and kept in a makeshift stilt hut called the Kyong-Niban atleast for three months to complete the rituals and then laid to rest.
